Leek Juice

The Nurses’ Health Study has shown that the flavonoid kaempferol in leeks is able to reduce a woman’s chance of contracting ovarian cancer by 40 percent.

Any type of cancer looking to cause trouble knows better than to mess with the allium family. Their kin include some serous gun-slinging antioxidants like onion, garlic and leek. Don’t let leek’s sweeter disposition fool you; even though it’s less dense then garlic and onion, the long cylinder stem and leaves contain the same anti-cancer punch as its stronger-tasting brothers.

Leeks have been cultivated in Central Asia and Europe for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks and Romans prized leeks for their beneficial effects upon the throat. Even though Aristotle and the Roman emperor Nero shared little when it came to philosophical ideology, they both believed that the lowly leek could impart a stronger voice to man and beast. And if that isn’t enough, Wales has christened the leek as its national emblem.

Phytochemicals & Antioxidants in Leek Juice
History has shown us that what our ancestors lacked in science, they were able to make up with years of empirical experimentation. Long before test tubes and microscopes, peoples all over the world were using plants such as the leek as medicine for illness, and to protect and improve human health. The Nurses’ Health Study has shown that the flavonoid kaempferol in leeks is able to reduce a woman’s chance of contracting ovarian cancer by 40 percent. Leeks also contain the powerful quercetin, which is known to inhibit the spread of cancer, especially colon and prostate cancer. And as with onions and garlic, leeks are also beneficial in helping to lower cholesterol and boost the immune system.

Look for dark green leaves and a solid white neck. Avoid signs of yellowing. Smaller leeks will be less fibrous and contain greater juice.

OMG! Juiced 1 and a half leeks in my spinach apple carrot orange and I about died from the burn and I mean intense burn in my stomach and nausea! Never again will I juice with leeks!

Its a little pungent but very delicious and nutritious reminds me of raw onion soup. I juiced 1/2 a bunch of kale, 2 carrots, 2 beets, 2 celery stocks, 1 clove of garlic, a handful of cilantro and spinach, and 2 leeks :) If you dont love the taste of leafy greens add an apple and it will be less bitter

Omg my poor pets eyes were watering! I have contacts so mine were good. The taste was awful! It burned my throat and nose. I didn't wanna waste my juice which has kale, celery, spinach, cucumber and broccli so I had to use the rest of my veggies and make 3 drinks just to even out the leek ratio. I only put about 3/4 of 1 leek in. Maybe people should juice just a pinch of leek if they want to live.

Dear mother of God. I juiced a leek & it was awful. It is like drinking onion juice. Nasty.

OMG. Just juiced a bunch of fresh spinach, 1 leaf of kale, carrots, an apple and a large whole leek. (just the white part. Instant intense burning in my gut, super nauseated. Ended up puking it all up. Still burping up Leek, and foaming saliva. Never again. I cannot recommend Leek for raw juicing. Made me physically ill and I juice all the time. I am an R.N.

I used one whole leek...the whole stalk in my green drink...I used that, 3 beets, 6 carrots, dandelion leaves, 1 med green apple, and one kiwi...and it came out pretty good...not too strong. Because it is great at metabolizing sugars...you can use some root veggies (like beets and carrots which have plenty of natural sugar but may be a bit too much for those who are diabetics or watching their waistlines), so using the leek will help break down those sugars...in the meantime you're getting all the nutritional elements all the vegetables have to offer plus it sweetens up the drink...not too bad if I say so myself!

We used just one medium leek in a mixed fruit/veg juice - the taste was overpowering and off-putting. Never again will we juice with leeks.
